How to Reduce Audio File Size Without Guessing
Reduce game and web audio size with format, bitrate, trimming and sample-rate choices.
Remove what players never hear
Trim unused starts, endings and long silent sections before changing codecs. This is often the safest size reduction because it does not add compression artifacts. Short fades can also prevent clicks when an effect is cut closely.
Use mono for a sound that does not need stereo positioning. For many UI sounds and small effects, mono can reduce data while retaining the intended result. Keep stereo for music, ambience or effects where the channel information is part of the experience.
Set bitrate after listening
Lossy formats reduce size by discarding information, so select a bitrate by listening to the real asset. Export a few candidates and compare them in context. Do not automatically use the highest bitrate for every sound or the lowest bitrate for every voice line.
Sample rate also affects size and processing. Choose one that matches the source and target need; unnecessary conversion can add work without improving the sound.
